Transition process for converting SSN to a generated identification number

Solution:
Transition Process for Converting SSN to Generated Identification Numbers:

In accordance with CSU Board of Trustees Resolution No. 02-31 dated June
14, 2002, the CSU Universities are required to eliminate the use of
Social Security numbers as a primary identifier in Banner as soon as is
practicable. Last summer, ECSU successfully eliminated the use of SSN
on their systems, WCSU is currently in the process of transitioning, and
CCSU will be completing the transition along with SCSU this summer. To
begin the transition process, on March 21, 2003, SCSU's Banner System
will be converted to generated identification numbers as the primary
identifier for all current student, staff and faculty records. From
March 21, 2003 to August 1, 2003, the change from SSN to generated ID
will affect only Banner. YOUR CURRENT HOOT LOOT ID CARD WILL CONTINUE TO
OPERATE DURING THIS PERIOD. However, to further eliminate the use of
SSN, over the Summer of 2003 current Hoot Loot cards will be replaced
and all students, staff and faculty will be issued new ID cards. The
new card will continue to allow access to student meal plans, be an on
and off campus debit card (Hoot Loot), as well as provide access to
administrative buildings and residence halls. Furthermore, any Hoot Loot
funds will be transferred onto your new ID card. To help in
understanding this process, the University Card Office has compiled a
list of frequently asked questions. If you have additional questions,
please feel free to contact the University Card Office directly at
extension 2-7077 or via email at onecard@southernct.edu.

Common Questions
When will the new generated Banner ID number be effective?
On March 21, 2003, the primary identifier in Banner (currently SSN)
will be converted to the new generated ID number for all current records
in the Banner System. After this date, all Banner rosters and reports
will list the new generated ID instead of SSN. A new process for
searching for students in Banner will be necessary.

How do I find someone in Banner without using a SSN?
A tutorial is available online that guides faculty and staff members
through the process of looking up someone's record in Banner without a
SSN. The tutorial is located at: http://www.southernct.edu/faculty/banner/tutorials/index.php?
file=alternateID.html
Please review this tutorial prior to March 21, 2003.
In addition, training sessions have been announced by Conrad Calandra of the
Banner Project Office. To participate in the hands-on training with Conrad,
please contact him directly at extension 2-5393 or via email at
calandrac1@southernct.edu

How will people know their new Banner ID?
For the most part, people won't know their new Banner ID until they
receive their new SCSU Hoot Loot ID card. The new eight digit generated
identification number will be printed on each student, staff and faculty
SCSU Hoot Loot ID card. The number will be located in the lower left
corner of the card and will be highlighted in red.

When will the new ID card be effective?
New cards will be printed and mailed between May and July 2003 and will
be effective August 1, 2003. Please remember that the current Hoot Loot
ID card and all the processes related to it will continue to operate
until August 1, 2003.
